One of the most delicious species in the world and such a prized catch!
Hogfish use their elongated snouts to root around in the sand for food, exactly like a hog. Their unique flavor is due to their diet of small crabs, shrimp and seashells, which translates into moist, white, tasty meat.
You can find them on rocky bottoms, ledges and reefs throughout the western Atlantic, from North Carolina and Bermuda, south to the Gulf of Mexico and the northern coast of South America. They are abundant in Florida and the Bahamas and can be found in shallow waters, ranging from 3 to 30m.
Hogfish is a very pretty fish and also a very good fish (even for beginners) to practice their polespearing skills on. They are not difficult to spear, so take your time, be selective, and don’t take long shots. Only take the shot if you are sure you can land it and respect the local laws.
