Pole spearing

There’s something about freediving spearfishing with a pole spear that gives it this kind of absolute primordial sense of hunting. For me, spearfishing with the hand spear is about joining the circle of life and participating in the ecosystem, eating a fish that I caught myself with a trigger-less underwater tool. With a pole spear, I think of myself as an ancient warrior with a simple weapon but with more advanced finswimming capabilities and on a single breath of air. Pure, real and fully sustainable hunt. It is just as simple as that.

To load a pole spear you pull the rubber loop (sling) as hard as you can and grab onto the spear, anchoring the rubber with your hand. Pole spears are the lightest form of aqua-based weaponry, aside from your bare hands. There’s always room for a hand spear in your kit as they’re light, cheap and small. You are going to need it, especially if you need to travel in the Bahamas, where spearfishing with a normal speargun is against the law!
